Nontraditional Wedding Cake Toppers

The tradition of incorporating cake toppers started in the 1950’s to symbolize the newly wed’s togetherness but they briefly took a back seat and give way to fresh flowers to top the wedding cake. Although fresh flowers are popular, cake toppers are making a comeback albeit made from nontraditional materials. More and more couples choose to use unique cake toppers to make their wedding cake a bit more memorable.

Traditional cake toppers are that of a bride and groom figurines standing together dressed in wedding attire but today, thanks to the modern approach, we can find various kinds of unique toppers made of several nontraditional materials.  These toppers can represent a couple’s personality, interests, hobbies and wedding style. Below are some of my favorite unique cake topper ideas.

Fondant Cakes by Mavic: Minimalist yet a Work of Art

Dear Online Diary,

We initially wanted a cupcake tower and a separate mini cake for cake cutting ceremony but it just doesn’t make sense that the cupcake tower rental fee costs 20% of the total price. Most of the credible suppliers that we found are from QC, all of which ask for not less than a thousand bucks just for delivery charge (I totally get this because cakes are fragile). If my calculations are accurate, the fees alone are more or less a quarter of our cake budget. These factors prompted me to look for a supplier from the southern part of the metro.

Ms. Mavic is another, shall we call, “Multiply.com wonder”. I was searching for an affordable cake supplier over at the multiply site when I spotted some of her beautiful cakes – minimalist, simple yet a work of art. That’s exactly what we want. When I sent an email inquiry, I was also hoping that she can work around our budget.

Dear Online Diary,

About 2 weeks ago, I was in search for a cake supplier. I was spending half of my sleeping time searching online and browsing through wedding magazines just to find the cake artist.

We want someone who takes his/her profession seriously and easy to talk to. We want someone who can work around our budget. We want someone who can make our dream cake possible.

Until I came across the multiply page of Ms. Mavic Selim. Without hesitation, I sent her a personal message to inquire about her cake packages. Luckily, she responded in a heartbeat. I then found myself exchanging YM with her for almost an hour (or two. Honestly, I lose track of the time. teehee). We talked about our wedding, her passion about baking and designing cakes, our cake design and what-have-you. I like her plan on how she’s going to execute our cake based on the pegs I sent her for inspiration. She then sent me a similar design she did for her previous client. She got me at that very moment. I believe that she’s going to execute the design beautifully. I just knew then that she's the cake artist for us.

Before booking, I told H2B about my convo with Ms. Mavic and how flexible she is. I let him browse through the websites of Ms. Mavic (you can find her in Facebook, too) and the pegs she sent that’s not online. With his approval, we booked her. Not only does he likes our wedding cake inspiration, he also likes the sample photos of the cakes that Ms. Mavic sent to me.

To make it official, we deposited the down payment yesterday. It’s final. Ms. Mavic will create our dream cake. Cheers! :))

Wedding Cake: The Search is on!

It's five months to go and the search for the wedding cake is (seriously) on!

We initially want a cupcake tower because we wanted to be practical but we’ll get a 3-layer cake package that’ll go with our wedding theme if the price is right.

Nice-to-Have: Towering & Unique Wedding Cakes

In a wedding, I’m almost certain that someone can distinguish the kind of wedding by merely looking and examining the wedding cake. A simple cake symbolizes a simple celebration while a towering designer cake means a grand festivity.

I’ve found two of the best wedding cakes almost all brides would like to have on their wedding day. Read on.

First off is the towering wedding cake of celebrity Ruffa Gutierrez and Yilmaz Bektas. It’s a 10 ft apple-walnut fondant, with Swarovski crystal trimmings. It was also reported that even when a member of the security personnel guarded the cake, it didn’t stop some of the guests from taking home the precious crystals.

This is the life-size wedding cake of Chidi Ogbuta of Texas, USA. The cake is 5 ft tall, which is made up of butterscotch (the skirt, which is the edible part) and polymer clay (the upper part and the limbs). It’s an exact replica of the bride in her wedding dress. For her, it’s a dream come true to have such a unique wedding cake.
